what these numbers are

Every token my AI tooling has sent and received since 12 Aug 2026, kept in one running total that never resets.

is what goes in, is what comes back out. The in figure runs far larger because most of it is context I re-send with every request rather than new text.

Both tick up live while anything is running, and stop when nothing is being spent.

Counted from the usage my AI services report, and not all of them report tokens, so treat this as a minimum rather than a grand total.

The oldest one in the room

13 October 2026

The age part deserves its own page. It is a different argument from the work going, even though the two arrive together, and I have put it off because it says the least about the tools and the most about me.

I have been at this since before the people I work alongside were born. Long enough that my habit with a broken system is to go quiet and listen to it, because I have met the same fault in another shape years earlier and the shape is what told me where to look. It took a long time to build and it does not fit on a rate card.

For most of my working life the years were the case for picking me. Whoever had watched the most things fail was the safest pair of hands in the building. I do not think the years stopped being worth anything. I think the question changed. What is in front of me now is speed and volume, and a long memory is slower than a fresh start when the fresh start can ask a tool.

There is a smaller part of it, and it is the harder one to say without sounding sorry for myself. I am usually the oldest person in the room or on the call. I notice how often I am the one explaining what a thing was like before it settled down, and how little of that anybody needed.

I do not want to turn this into a complaint about being passed over, because that is not the shape of it. The work still comes. What moved is where the years sit in the estimate. Being the one who has seen the most of it has stopped being the reason somebody gets in touch, and has quietly become a line I have to argue down.

If the work thins out, the years will not save me. I would be the cheapest thing to stop asking for, and nobody has to have intended that for it to happen. A list of names gets shorter by the same rules it got written.

None of that has made me want to put the tools down. If anything I am more careful with what is in front of me, because the years are the part I brought and I still like the work. I patch the servers, I keep the sites up, I answer questions when somebody asks, and I do the small jobs properly. There is no scheme under that. It is the work I have, and I would rather write the honest version of it than pretend the years are about to come back into fashion.
